Should I Use Up All of My Weekly Bonus Points While Nursing?

I joined WW 6 weeks ago to help me lose the last of my weight gained from pregnancy. To date I've lost 11 lbs and this past week I gained .4 lbs. I know, its no biggie, but I am totally confused about the extra weekly points. Should I be eating all of those? This past week I started walking 3 miles every other day. I think that is about 2 activity points a walk. Should I be eating those activity points as well?

Because I am breastfeeding I presently have 29 daily target points. So should I eat 29 points + 35 extra + any activity point?


It is not necessary for the average person to use up all your weekly bonus points but since you are breastfeeding, I personally would. Nursing alone burns about 500 calories a day. You should use those bonus points to increase your intake of nutritious foods such as dairy, fruits, vegetables and protein. According to Weight Watchers, nursing moms should increase their milk products to at least 3 a day. Increase your intake of healthy oils to 3 teaspoons a day and fruits and vegetables should be increased to at least 8 servings per day. They also recommend you drink at least 8 glasses of water per day.

So to answer your question, yes, you should eat your 29 + activity points + 35 bonus points per week.

How do you feel about non-Moms eating their bonus 35?

Sometimes I feel like I won't lose weight if I eat my 35, but I workout a ton (earn around 40 activity points a week) so struggle if I don't use my 35.

Those bonus points always worry me though.

Thoughts?

I am a nursing mom, and have been in regular discussion with my leader about how many points to consume and what is right for me personally. It really depends on if your child is exclusively nursing, also eating solids, and if your child is over one year. If it's the first 6 months and the baby is exclusively breastfed, I fully agree with your advice. However say for me, my child is over a year and consumes solids so I am only taking an extra 2pts/week for nursing and not necessarily consuming extra or activity points and it hasn't affected supply, I am not starving and am losing. BTW LOVE LOVE LOVE your blog, it is FANTASTIC!!! :)

For non-nursing moms, it's not necessary to eat those bonus points. The choice is entirely yours. But you must eat your daily points and activity points to keep your metabolism going. Also, as you lose weight, your daily points allowance decreases so always check to make sure you are not eating more than you should.

@Allie- Great point and thanks for sharing that! Yes, as babies start eating solids or if you supplement with formula, this would change. You should always speak to your leader with any questions you may have about whether or not you are eating the proper amount of food, especially if you are nursing.

@Allie - Did you say you only take in an extra two points per week because you are nursing or did I mis-read that? My WW breastfeeding handout says that when breastfeeding and supplementing with formula, you should have an extra 5 pts/day. However, my nine-month old doesn't BF as much as she used to and seems to be taking in more solids than milk. I've been wondering why I'm not losing any weight. I ramped up my workouts two weeks ago from three cardio workouts a week to three days of running, two days of weight training and two strength training workouts per week, yet I haven't seen even minimal weight loss, nor are clothes even fitting remotely better. Now I'm wondering if I'm consuming too many points...

I wanted to check in and say, that I spent this past week trying to eat as much of my points as possible. I lost 3.6 lbs in one week! I am so often afraid to eat, but eating, within your point allowance, is a GOOD thing!

Sorry I didn't subscribe to addl comments Tamara and didn't see your comment. The manual says 5 points, but my leader and I discussed how I only nurse 3x/day at most now and eats mainly solids so she said 2 points per day addl instead of 5. Since your child isn't a year yet, you will probably want more than 2, but as that s/he is consuming more solids than milk, 5 is probably not necessary. I bet a leader would say 3 or 4 points.

Thanks Allie! I think she actually is consuming more solids than milk. She only has milk two to four times a day right now - it's all she wants! She eats a lot of cereal, fruit, vegetables, yogurt, cheese and meat, and is gaining weight fine and seems healthy, so I haven't been too worried. However, I also haven't adjusted points based on the fact that I don't nurse nearly as often as I used to!
