Low Point Pasta

I love my pasta and so does my family, but all that white starch tends to stick to all the wrong places. There is nothing quite like the taste of good old semolina pasta which is usually 4 points per 2 oz. raw, or 1 cup cooked. Luckily in the past few years there have been many great tasting, lower point pastas being sold here in the States. They cost a little more and don't come in all the shapes and varieties you find in regular semolina pasta, but I'm hoping that will change soon!

Here is a list of 0 (yes zero!), 2 and 3 point pastas, most of which I've tried. Please feel free to share your favorite low point pastas if they aren't listed here!

2 Point Pasta (per 2 oz uncooked)

Fiber Gourmet Pasta - Only 2 points! And 18 grams of fiber per 2 oz. I was pleasantly surprised when I tried this, I thought it tasted really good! They come in a variety of shapes. My only negative is they are not cheap! But I guess that's the price we pay for looking good.

3 Point Pasta (per 2 oz uncooked)

Ronzoni Smart Taste - High Fiber Pasta. By far one of my favorites! Taste like regular pasta, my family can't tell I've switched!!

Dreamfields - Low Carb Pasta. This is also delicious pasta, tastes just like regular pasta and they even have Lasagna noodles!

Fiber Wise - High Fiber Pasta. Comes in a variety of shapes in including shells! These are found in most supermarkets.

Barilla Whole Grain Pasta - 51% whole wheat pasta.

0 Point Pasta (per 3 oz uncooked)

Japanese Shirataki Noodles are Calorie Free, Carb Free, Fat Free, Wheat Free, Soy Free and Gluten Free. I have not tried these but heard a lot about them. They were featured on the Rachel Ray show. They are 0 calories, 0 points. I think I need to give these a try, they almost sound too good to be true!  If any of you have tried them, please let me know how they are!

Miracle Noodles - Japanese Shirataki Noodles are Calorie Free, Wheat Free, Soy Free and Gluten Free.

Shirataki Noodles - I found these on the Asian Food Grocer at almost half the price. This is a great site by the way, I purchase all my Asian ingredients here when I can't find them in my supermarket.

I love Fiber Gourmet pasta! I like to call it binge proof pasta, no way I can eat more than 4 ounces of that! lol :)

Shirataki Noodles are great but you Definitely have to soak them in water first because when you open them they smell gross (a bit fishy). But they taste pretty much like regular pasta when they have a sauce on them. I get them at Whole Foods in the refrigerated section.

Thanks Colleen, that's good to know! I work near Whole Foods, I will def. have to try them out.

You can buy them for $2 at Whole Foods!

I love FiberGourmet (especially the Rotini and the Lasagna) and the Dreamfields. I have both in my pantry and use both. Dreamfields is more like regular pasta, but they're both great and the FiberGourmet sure gets the fiber count UP and UP. Great to add in soups for filling fiber.

I have to agree, Ronzoni Smart Pasta is the closest tasting to regular pasta, my family loves it.

I was using Barilla Whole Grain pastas for a while and tried Ronzoni when it was cheaper during a sale. My family is so glad we went back to 'regular' pasta!! :) And for the same 3 points I like the taste and texture SO much more!!

@Emily- I agree, my family did not approve of Barilla Whole Grain Pasta. Ronzoni Smart Taste and Dreamfields both taste like regular pasta. Thank God for that!

I live in Japan and use Shirataki Noodles all the time. It is REALLY popular among the Japanese. I use them in soup too. They work really well in that. But, you do have to rinse them off with cold water as they smell very fishy. Enjoy!!

That is what I hear. I am buying them this week, can't wait to experiment!!

I have tried the Tofu Shirataki noodles and though they were disgusting. I followed all of the instructions as far as soaking them, then drying them really well, but the taste of them literally made me nauseous and I threw the entire thing in the garbage.
Personally, I'd rather just eat regular pasta for 4 points per cup, instead of spending more money to only save 2 points per serving for something that isn't the real thing.

@Cindy, I heard that you really need to soak them. I've yet to get a chance to try them but I really think you should try Ronzoni Smart Taste at 3 points per cup. You would never know!! They should start paying me the way I'm always raving about their pasta!

Hi Gina :)
Thank you for mentioning AsianFoodGrocer.com, I wanted to give your readers a heads up with our shirataki noodles. Be sure to rinse and toss them in a strainer several times, then par boil them for 3-5 minutes. That should get the preservative taste and smell off of them. If you don't then you may end up with an upset tummy.

Enjoy,
-Asian Food Grocer

I'm also a fan of the Barilla Plus. I like the fact that they have the extra Omega 3, It helps those of us who don't think we eat enough fish! And they are only 3 points too.

Ick! The Barilla tastes bad to me. Glad to know that there are other options.

Any idea about points for Tinkyada Brown Rice pasta?

Gina @ Skinnytaste said...

@Kate- for those of you who are gluten free, Tinkyada brown rice is a great tasting option, but it's 4 points like regular pasta.

Have you ever tried Nooodles? They're good and 0 points!

Gina @ Skinnytaste said...

Noooodles? Never heard of them.

I was disappointed to discover that the Dreamfield pasta is 5 points+

Julie, I am so sad my favorite pastas went up. I will still be using them, I do have more points per day now.

I've tried shiritaki noodles and I actually bought the in Asian Food Grocer but later found out that they're available in most of the supermarkets in the tofu and vegetarian section. Personally I don't like them, they have a different than regular pasta consistency, slightly slimy and gummy and they have a fishy smell which is hard to get rid of even after rinsing. Moreover I've noticed that 30 min after eating them I wan hungry again and any pasta dish won't taste with them as good as with regular or high fiber pasta.

thanks you pasta.Slimming Diet healthy diet plan. I heard that you will need to relax these. I've but to acquire a opportunity to make use of them but I really think make an attempt Ronzoni Sensible Style from several factors for every glass. You'll can't predict!! They must begin paying out us the best way I'm usually raving relating to dinner!

I read this yesterday and was all excited about Dreamfields and Ronzoni Smart pasta being lower points, and I ran out and bought some only to find they are 5 points also. You should probably update this post so people don't make the same mistake I did. :-(

Ronzoni Garden Delight pasta is also delicious! A bit higher in points than Smart Taste but still lower than regular pasta and the fun colors are great for making pasta salad

I rinse them very well, and then pan fry them, which dries them out a lot more. Otherwise they are like "worms" (as my mother called them).
