I know you recently had a baby, did you count points while you were pregnant?

When I found out I was pregnant, I had the same question... can I count points while pregnant and if so how many? Weight Watchers does not provide services to pregnant woman because it is essential you gain weight and they recommend you speak to your physician about how many extra calories you should eat a day. I was in my maintaining phase when I became pregnant and I was worried about gaining too much weight, especially since I just turned 40. Rather than counting points, I focused on eating whole grains, nuts, high fiber, low fat food, lean meat, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. In addition to that, I went to the gym as long as I felt comfortable going, with my doctor's permission of course. My daughter is now 2 months old, and I have about 9 lbs to go to reach my pre-pregnancy weight. What are your experiences with weight gain and pregnancy?

I just had a baby girl on 12/17/09 and I was also maintaining when I became pregnant. I counted points for the first trimester or so, but then focused on healthy foods. I really had to watch it, because with baby #1 I gained about 55lbs {scary!!} but I am happy to report that I have 12lbs to go before I am back down to my pre-pregnancy weight and the baby is almost 2 months. Happy weight watchers!

I had just started WW and was overweight when I got pregnant, and I ended up gaining 44 pounds because I was not careful about eating and I was on bedrest so could not move around. Next time around, my intention is to count points, but to do it by counting the number of points I would if in maintenance, plus the extra points for the extra 300 or so calories pregnant women should have in a day. For me, it is just not enough to focus on eating right, although I am hoping that changes now that I am back to WW...

Gina said...

Thanks for sharing Bethany! 12 lbs to go, good for you! I believe the first month you don't have to change your diet too much, but the second month your supposed to consume an additional 300 calories a day, which is really not a lot.

@yummysushipajamas- I know some people who followed the points for nursing mothers as a guide. I'm not sure if that is the equivalent to 300 extra calories, I'll have to look into that. All situations are different and I know some people like having the points as a guide to help them stay within limits.

I gained a lot with both my pregnancies & still have some to lose now with baby girl being 16 months old. My most difficult part was that I nursed to at least 13 months with each child and would notice a large decrease in my supply if I cut calories or started exercising like I need to in order to lose weight. Since Jan 1st though, I've lost about 10 pounds and have about 20 more to go to be at prepg weight from DD.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Amy- I am nursing, and as soon as I decreased my calorie intake, my milk supply decreased. So I am just making better food choices and not worried about losing weight at this time. The weight is coming off very slowly- but I think that its because with the new baby I spend less time on the couch.

Gina said...

That's interesting that your milk supply decreased. Always do what's best for the baby and worry about counting points after. I only nursed for the first month and I did not count points until after she was on formula.

Hi Gina! I stumbled upon your website for ww recipes when I googled a lowfat chicken recipe. What a wonderful surprise to find your website! Looks like we have alot in common. My son is 2 months old, I'm a huge fan of ww since 2001, and I'm also a graphic designer! The photos of all your recipes are beautiful. Thanks for all the inspiring dishes and information. I've been following ww on my own loosely counting points and concentrating on exercise and just getting back to the basics. I'm 4lbs from my prebaby weight (I gained 38 with my son and he was born 11/27/09) It feels good to get back to healthy eating AND exercise. Hoping to shed 20 more that have crept up since my goal weight from 2001.

Thanks,
Karyn

Gina said...

Yes, we do have a lot in common. Thanks about the pictures, photography is new to me. I love it though. You're doing great! Only 4 lbs to go. Good for you! I wish I had more time to exercise but I'm sure I'll find the time soon.

Thank you for bringing up this topic. Before I had my daughter I ate healthy and exercised regularly. However, during pregnancy I still gained 48 lbs and it took me over a year to lose all of the weight. It finally came off thanks to WW. I am hoping to become pregnant in the coming months and am very worried about gaining too much weight again and having to struggle to get it off. I'm really hoping there's a way to find a healthy point amount so I can keep myself in check this time around!

Anonymous said...

Do you think if you do ww before pregnancy and then during that your metabolism slows down making it harder to lose the weight?

Gina said...

I don't think so. Ideally, it's best to lose the weight before you get pregnant. It's easier to take the weight off after.

So, I had three pounds to go to get to goal when I got pregnant. I had lost almost 160 pounds, and had said millions of times that I would never gain the weight back. Hmph...then the doctor said to stay away from WW until the nine months were up. So I took him at his word and gained well over 100 pounds (maybe around 120 or so) back in less than a year. Those Big Macs were NOT worth it, I swear. I have lost about 50 since she was born on 2/2/09, but I still have at least 50 more. I am not sure that I want to get back to pre-pregnancy weight, because I felt that I was too thin. However, just wearing SOME of my pre-pregnancy clothes would be nice.

Gina, thanks for all of your hard work on the great recipes. My family's particular fave is the Crockpot Chicken Taco Chili (or some variation of those four words! :) )

Gina, Thanks so much for this site! It's so helpful in many ways! I am nursing full time currently (baby is 5 mos.)and am trying WW. Your food choices look great and I can't wait to try them. I'm doing ok so far - as long as I maintain a reasonable calorie intake and drink LOTS of fluids! 5 lbs down, 30 more to go! Thanks again!

Anonymous said...

I've been a Weight Watcher for about 3 years and have kept off about 100 lbs for almost 1 year - but I've never had kids. However, I've found it is often safe to assume 1 point for every 50 calories (this is a good rule of thumb if you only know the calories of a dish, and not the fat or fiber). So if your doctor says you should eat an additional 300 calories per day, you could probably safely add 6 points per day during pregnancy.

Billie Kay said...

I started WW when my son was 6 months old and I was still breastfeeding exclusively. My milk supply never went down and I breastfed him until he was 12 months old. I added 11 points to my daily points and still usually lost 2-3 pounds a week. Drink lots of water!! I am preggo with number two and will be doing WW again once I have the baby. It worked for me. However I am not doing it while I am pregnant..just using the same eating habits...lots of veggies, chicken breast, and lots of water.

Gina said...

I was so thirsty when I was nursing too.

If the doctor says no WW while pregnant, he's not telling you to eat whatever you want, as much as you want. You should still eat the same food you were eating on WW without counting the points. It's all healthy, low fat, high fiber food with lots of vegetables, you can't go wrong.

Anonymous said...

I'm just doing WW now and I have had 3 kids. With my first two I really didn't have problems with milk supply while nursing(for 12+months) and losing weight but with baby #3 it was a big problem. I found drinking a lot of water and making sure I had some time of rest each day helped. Sometimes the kids keep us moms running around alot...down time I believe is essential to losing weight and having good milk supply while nursing.
Thanks for all the great recipe ideas!!!

I am really excited about this site. I found out about it from another WW member at my weekly meeting. I have 4 kids and my youngest is 5mths old my oldest is 5yrs old. I have been on WW for over 5 yrs. I found it very hard to not be "allowed" to attend WW while I was pregnant because I think that for someone who has struggled with my weight for most of my life during pregnancy is when you are going to need someone the most. You are going to gain weight, but it is the challange to not let it get out of control.

I had not lost my baby weight after my 3rd because he had a lot of health problems, so I went into the pregnancy over-weight. I know that WW works but it is sure hard to do when you are exhausted mentally, physically and emotionally. It is all about taking one day at a time.
I struggled with breast feeding with all my children. It is very important to me that I breast feed because the last 3 kids can't tolerate milk, therefor I am not having any milk products. I really want to breastfeed until at least 12mths but I have to be careful with limiting calories and doing too much cardio because my milk supply with drop quite a bit.
It has been the hardest this time losing the weight, but I know that it can be done it is just going to take a little longer.
I am looking forward to trying all these great recipes. I appreciate the time and effort that you put in.

Anonymous said...

I just discovered your website yesterday and was so excited. I'm a lifetime member of Weight Watchers and recently became pregnant so I don't attend meetings now. I used to always make the recipes on their website but since I don't want to pay the monthy fee anymore I don't have access to the recipes. So finding your website with recipes and pts. was very exciting. I gained about 45 lbs. with my last pregnancy and it took a year to take it all off so I said this time around I didn't want to gain that much weight so I'm trying to take what I learned from Weight Watchers and apply it now.

Thanks for creating the site!

I just had a baby on 12/4/09. After my first pregnancy I lost the weight SUPER fast (via the "breastfeeding diet" LOL!). I had gained nearly 50 pounds! About 3 months later I was already back into my normal, pre-pregnancy clothes. This time around I haven't been so fortunate w/ the weight loss (despite exclusively breastfeeding). And I gained about the same! :o/ So I just joined ww (again....) this past weekend. I have about 20 pounds to get to my pre preg weight but would like to lose about 30 in all. I can't tell you how excited I am about your site!! You are awesome! I've already made my grocery list for tomorrow and I can't wait to try the recipes!! My husband is doing it too for the first time (w/ my help...he has no time for the meetings) and we're both kinda picky eaters so I'm very excited to see the variety of recipes on here. My incentive is the beautiful ring my husband bought me for our 10 yr anniv (celebrated while I was pregnant) that I have yet to wear!! :( I haven't worn my rings since I was about 5 months pregnant so I'm very excited to lose some weight and get them back on my skinny fingers!! :)

Gina said...

@Evelyn- I hope that ring fits soon!
@Christina- You are welcome!
@Leeanne- Yes, one day at a time :)

Thank you all for sharing your stories! For those of you who just had babies like myself, don't be so hard on yourself, it will come of. It took 9 months to gain it, hopefully you will lose it in the next 9 months if you stay dedicated to the program.

I gained 27 lb during pregnancy... after delivery and 2 weeks at home I had to loose 17 to get back... I did, but the muscle tone is gone.. and for now I don't have time for gym or any additional physical activity since i in college and have terrible two's girl! but still hope to get extra 5lb off and get in tone!

Gina said...

It's nice to read all of these stories...I joined ww last winter in an attempt to lose weight before trying to get pregnant with our first baby. I wanted to be as healthy as possible -- I have lost 36 of 50 pounds so far and we are officially going to start trying in June. The problem is, now I am getting terrified of gaining all the weight back that I have worked so hard to lose. Instead of getting excited, now I am so scared. People just keep saying, "oh it's worth it to have a baby," but that isn't much comfort. Any advice?

gina! i love your food/recipe blog and just found this one today!
i've have been wondering this very same question since my BFP almst 3 months ago! i did ww 2 years ago and got to my goal weight and kept it off. then in january i just wanted to shed a few more 'vanity' lbs. 2 weeks later i found out i was pregnant. for the first trimester i counted points, adding a few more per day so that i wasn't losing weight. i gained 2-3 lbs.
im 16 wks now and i still count, out of habit, but i make sure i am not hungry and i am eating enough. i count calories, too, so i know i am getting enough. i just wish there was a point # to aim for each day!
thanks for posting this question!

I am 9 weeks pregnant and am counting points diligently while being pregnant. I'm "considered" obese and should only gain 11-20 pounds for my height and weight. I gained 60 with my last baby and was miserable. I took it all off but have swore not to gain that much weight again. I'm sticking to my points and exercising. I feel better already and have even lost a couple of pounds. I see my figure taking a healthy shape and having more energy. I'm excited about this pregnancy... and the fact that I have to be pregnant during the summer (with shorts)really keeps me on track!

Evan and Nicole said...

Thanks for your wonderful site Gina! I feel very equipped!

I was very active and ate a "paleo" diet...then I got pregnant. Out of discomfort and being scared - I stopped exercising. I had no idea how to eat but I figured an extreme diet was not the best - so I began to eat carbs again. Slowy but surely other bad foods crept into my diet. I'm now 22 weeks pregnant and found out a couple weeks ago that I gained 30 pounds. This is unacceptable and not healthy.

I joined WW online and through some manipulation - gave myself 37 points (approximately 1850 calories.)

I don't follow the points exactly - I eat when I'm hungry and if I need extra points I eat them. But I realized I needed some kind of guide and accountability because of the unhealthy road I was headed down.

I have the opposite problem! I didn't gain a lot (I gained 12 lbs) during pregnancy but starting gaining when my son was a couple months old. He breastfeeds and I'm always hungry! I started WW (for the second time- the first was in 2006 and I successfully lost my 10% and a little more before my wedding) but only stuck with it for 2 weeks, losing 2 pounds. I know it works, but I just can't find the motivation to stick with it this time around.

I am seventeen weeks pregnant right now. In my first trimester what I tried to do was stay on my maintenance plan of 24 points a day and just eat 100 extra calories at the end of the day. That worked okay, but I think I actually ended up losing a few pounds because I was so nauseous all the time and didn't want to eat. Now I'm in my second tri and ALL I think about is food! But so far I am doing okay. I read that I'm supposed to eat 300 extra calories a day, so I figured there's about 50 calories to a point and gave myself six extra points a day for a total of thirty. Seemed like a lot to me at first, but I have no problem eating all those points now! :-) Glad to have found your site; your recipes look yummy!

Tamara said...

Every doctor and medical professional may tell you something different, but I read in several resources that you can continue to eat as you normally would for the first trimester, and then add 300 calories for the duration of pregnancy. I stopped counting points during the first trimester and focused more on calories. I tried to still eat well, while allowing myself some indulgences. I still ate tons of salad and lean meats. It helped that I craved watermelon like it was going out of style. My biggest challenge was retaining fluid. My feet and legs were so packed with fluid, that it elicited comments from strangers whenever I went out. Pre-WW, I had weighed 222 lbs at my biggest, but had been down to about 167 before becoming pregnent. Two weeks before I delivered, I weighed in at 210 lbs. I nearly cried - I thought I'd been doing so well. Then I dared to get on a scale a week after my baby was born and discovered I'd dropped to 184 - 26 lbs in fluid and baby weight were gone! Now I'm about six pounds away from my pre-baby weight and 12-15 away from my goal. I've followed WW while breastfeeding and am really focused on trying to eat well in hopes my baby girl will eventually pick up good eating habits simply by observing her parents.

Love it, Tamara, good for you!! I think it's sooo important to teach our kids good eating habits instead of just keeping them to ourselves...

If only motivation came in a bottle!! I find joining a class, like dance, zumba, yoga, pilates, gives me the motivation to eat right. Especially if you join with a friend. As you start seeing results, and you work so hard to get there, you really don't want to throw out all that hard work on a burger and fries. Works for me!

@Maggie, Congrats!! Enjoy this time!!

@Tamara, good for you!! Start them young with healthy choices and that is all they will know.

@Anonymous, you didn't mention if you are exercising or what you are eating.

I had my son 9/26/09. I was on WW before I got pregnant. I was at my goal but slowly gained back about 15 pounds mostly because I knew I was going to be pregnant. I tried watching what I ate while I was pregnant but still managed to gain 42 pounds. I exclusively pumped for six months, which helped me loss most of my weight. After I went back to work I joined WW again. I'm pass pregnancy weight and I'm about 5 pounds from my goal.

I started WW in 2005 in order to get healthy...prior I had gallbladder issues, high cholesterol, my PCOS was out of control and my clothes size just seemed to get bigger and bigger.

I started WW 11.13.2005 at 201.4 pounds, lost over 65 lbs in 1 & 1/2 years, making Goal/Lifetime at 135 lbs on 05.13.2007. Finally I was healthy, my cholesterol was normal, my BMI was normal, my PCOS was controlled and I was happy!! My husband & I planned for a baby & found out we were pregnant 12.11.2007, only 7 months after I reached Lifetime (we thought it would take longer w. my having PCOS, but the weight loss really helped!!). I tried to follow a healthy diet during pregnancy, but it didn't work out. I gave into lot of the cravings I had (mostly for dairy products, so there was a lot of things dipped in sour cream...which funny enough, I still like now!). I gained 20 pounds back before I was pregnant and another 57 on top of that, I was my heaviest pregnant at 215 lbs....was 184.6 lbs post-pregnancy & rejoined WW only 2 weeks after my son was born (he was born 08.07.2008; rejoined WW 08.28.08).

BUT...I am so pleased to say that my son will be 2 in August 2010 and I am currently 145 lbs, going to make my new WW goal 141 lbs (what they recommend for my 5'3 height)...so I am only 4 lbs away from Goal/Lifetime again :)!!! It was a LONG and hard road...adjusting to Mommyhood, being a stay at home Mom, wife and trying to take care of myself, but I managed. Now, I am working w. my WW leader to work for WW in the near future :)

Thank you for letting me share my story!!

My husband an I are doing WW together but not going to meetings, just using the books as a guido to how many points we can have. I'm 26 weeks pregnant and I already have a 15 month old. With my son I gained about 32 pounds but in between having him and getting pregnant again, I never lost my weight. Now I've reached the 210 mark and decided I needed to learn healthy eating choices and this website has helped tremendously. I give myself 29 points which I find is plenty since I eat so many fruits and vegetables when I feel hungry and I have not gained a thing in this whole pregnancy. My goal isn't so much to lose weight but not gain a tremendous amount. My husband only has 10 more pounds to go and I have about 40 but this website has helped a lot. Any other pregnant woman have a bit of a guide on how many points they should have? Thanks Gina for all your hard work!

You're welcome Becky and congratulations!

hey just some advice, you need the same amount of extra calories while nursing as while pregnant roughly...maybe even a few less...but nearly the same..so if you want to count points just fill out the ww info as if you want to maintain weight and you are full time exclusively nursing...should show you how many points you need while pregnant to be healthy and not gain too much weight but not really be losing either. and if you are obese going into the pregnancy my dr. said it would b ok if i lost a little weight anyway ...but that is my advice to just put that you are exclusively breastfeeding and want to maintain...it will b plenty of food for you and your baby and you can always use your 35 bonus points as well. :)

When I got pregnant with my son, I gained 25 pounds the first 22 weeks. I asked my OB if I could go back on WW and her response? "ABSOLUTELY." She said it's the best program for healthy eating and asked me to simply add 5 points to my daily point bank (based on my starting weight.) I was then able to maintain and NOT gain for the next ten weeks or so. That really helped me get control back.

We are currently TTC again, and I will continue WW.

PS- just found your site and LOVE it!

I just "discovered" this website last week and love it! I joined WW to lose weight and to help make my second pregnancy so much easier on my body. The first pregnancy I started out at 204, weight on delivery night 229. I didn't gain too much, but my blood pressure was through the roof and everything else was on the verge of being a serious problem. I hated worrying daily so I vowed to make as many changes as I could control, weight being the biggest factor. I haven't hit "goal" yet but am now at 167, and will add 5-6 points (or will adjust) daily to finally have a healthy pregnancy. Thank you so much!

I was overweight when I became pregnant in January 2009 and it just worsened throughout the pregnancy when I gained 50lbs and for my height (5') that is NOT good at all. So the first 4 months of being a Mom I just sailed through while nursing and lost 39lbs before I actually started trying to lose weight on the first of January. At that point I started excercising and just trying to eat healthier on my own plan. On my own plan I lost 24lbs until I was introduced to WW in July. Since being on WW I've lost 21 lbs and I've only got 4 lbs to go before I reach my final resting goal. It feels so great to be where I'm at and I have WW and this website to thank now! It's so easy I just don't know why people would try to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight any other way! I'm looking forward to talking with my doctor about possibly staying on WW when I get pregnant again. I just don't foresee myself being able to control what I'm eating with a baby inside. I need guidance! Thanks for this post - refreshing to know it's possible! :)

A friend of mine sent me a link to your site this past summer when I had rejoined WW after my wedding in June. She and I both love it and I especially love all of your recipes! I grew a garden this year and was able to use many of your recipes in my fresh garden cooking.

After meeting my goal of 145lb (I am 5"8'), I got pregnant! As of now, I am 5 months pregnant and have gained about 15 lbs. I have been using it as an excuse to eat what I want. It was a rough first few months, until now. I was sick often and my diet consisted of high point foods and carbs. I have started to cook more balanced meals again, stock up on healthy snacks and walking everday. I just wanted to thank you for having this great resoure. I am all about getting back to my goal weight after pregnancy and appreciate all the stories that everyone is sharing. I worry I am going to have such a hard time getting back into my routine once we have the baby. How did you do it? How did you get back on track post-pregnancy?

Thank you for your insight, ~Gina :)

Gina @ Skinnytaste said...

Congratulations!! Your routine WILL change, I want lie. But you'll just create new routines, try not to stress about this, it all works itself out.

I went through the nesting phase in my 8th month and had every room spotless and ready. The first 3 months are the toughest, then it gets easier. I recommend if you have the time, to stock your pantry before you deliver with healthy staples, low carb pasta, rice, chicken stock, etc.

Another recommendation is to make some freezer meals, so you'll have meals ready to go on those nights you don't have time. Make double batches of soups, sauces, stews, etc. You'll thank me later.

As for my routine, it's completely different now than it was before. But that's ok, no regrets!!

Hi Gina! This is the first time visiting your site and I found this thread very interesting.

My son is just about to turn 2 yrs old, and I just reached my goal by using Weight Watchers. I have been on and off WW since June 2006.

During the pregnancy with my son, which was my 1st pregnancy, I gained roughly 60 lbs. I had been following WW, but then stopped and used being pregnant as an excuse to eat from the moment my test was +. It also was a challenge because I was very nauseous all day long in the beginning, which caused me to eat whatever sounded good at the time.

The next time I become pregnant, which will be within the next year, I plan to count points. I am in maintenance, so I will use my current daily points to maintain (25) + approx 500 extra calories per day needed during pregnancy(approx 10 pts) + my 35 weekly points. I plan to add more if I am not gaining at an acceptable rate.

I have realized through the years that if I am not counting points, I eat everything in sight, and it is as if I don't know how to eat. (I am a recovering binge eater.) Counting points helps me to make healthier choices.

Gina, I have a question for you since you were already a lifetime member when you became pregnant, and I've always wondered how this would work.

I am also a lifetime member, and we are planning on having a baby in the next couple years. I was wondering what happens as a lifetime member when you get pregnant.
Do you have to re-join the program again once you're finished (Or do they put you on "pause" during your pregancy) then you just resume your lifetime membership again once you've had the baby are are working to lose the baby weight?

I'm really interested to know how it will work when I become pregnant.

Thanks for your time, love the site!!

Nichole- when you get pregnant you have to stop going to weight watchers but after the baby is born you have 3 months grace period where you go to meetings for free and try to get back (or as close) to your goal weight as possible. Once the 3 months is over you have to start paying until you are 2 lbs from your goal weight.

Maggie P said...

I just had a baby as a lifetime member, and my meeting leader told me I had six months to lose the baby weight before having to pay fees for being over goal again. I used all six months, but at the end of it, some receptionists were telling me I should have only had three months. Upon further investigation, I found out they were right: A lifetime member has a three-month grace period to lose baby weight.

My question is, how can this be healthy??? According to information taken from WW's official website (http://www.weightwatchers.com/util/art/index_art.aspx?tabnum=1&art_id=24571&sc=801), a woman should wait 6-8 weeks postpartum before trying to lose weight. Every credible doctor and medical website I've been to says a woman at a healthy weight should gain 25-35 pounds during her pregnancy. 10-15 of that comes off within the first week after giving birth, but the rest, according to WW's Nursing Moms pamphlet, should come off at 1-2 pounds a week. When you do the math, that means that, according to WW's, a woman is expected to lose anywhere from 10-25 pounds in one month! When I brought this to the attention of customer support, I was told that you can bring in a physician's note if you need more time to safely lose the weight. However, I am still deeply disturbed that anyone would tell a new mother that she should expect to be back to pre-pregnancy weight by three months postpartum! That is neither healthy nor realistic, and adjusting to life with a newborn is stressful enough without such expectations.

I am greatly disappointed in Weight Watchers. I have always respected and recommended their program for purporting healthy and realistic weight loss skills, and I have recently lost much of this respect due to this issue.

Thoughts?

Gina @ Skinnytaste said...

I could understand your disappointment. I rejoined myself after I had the baby, I was not a lifetime member or at least I never followed up. I agree that you should lose at your own pace, and there are many factors, like if you are breast feeding, if you had twins, etc. Moms have so much pressure of their own to lose the baby weight, I personally didn't start WW until after I breastfed.

That's smart of you, Gina. I did try to do the program while breastfeeding, but like others have said, I didn't have enough milk. I had to make up my own temporary diet (no sweets allowed... that's why it was very TEMPORARY :-) while breastfeeding so that my son could eat!

If anyone agrees with my previous post and is as upset about that as I am, it would be wise to take time to express your disappointment to Lori at winningpoints@weightwatchers.com. Tell them that the expectation to lose baby weight by three months postpartum is unrealistic and unhealthy and that their scientists would be well-advised to do better research in this area. I e-mailed them myself, but I don't think they will take me seriously until they hear from more people who are concerned about this issue.

Thanks for sharing Maggie, I am sure this will help others!

I just found your site and love it, thank you so much for taking the time. I had a baby 4 1/2 months ago and am now actively trying to lose the weight.

Funny, when I called Weight Watchers, which I was using when I found out I was pregnant, to ask if I could still use their site, they IMMEDIATELY deactivated my account, I couldn't even go in to write down my measurements! I guess they want no liability, which I understood, but wowza. Slow down, Tex!

Back on it now and really appreciate your recipes - will be using them.

Gina @ Skinnytaste said...

That's pretty odd! Well congrats on the baby! They grow so fast, enjoy every moment.

Hi Gina,
I had an out of control first pregnancy. I gained so much weight due to comfort eating. I had a surprise pregnancy and was let go when I told my employer I hit 3 month since I worked in commercial construction. It's legal. I was put on disability leave after building myself a career.

I just found out today I'm pregnant again. I rejoined WW 2 weeks ago to conquer 10 extra pounds I put on over 4 months since stopping breastfeeding. I was on WW while bfeeding but didnt' follow through with maintenance. I went way below goal, so I canceled my online membership. I should have gone to maintenance as I overate once done bfeeding.

I'm determined to only gain baby weight this time. I have an exercise routine now, I eat whole real food and I'm in a better head space. My doctor told me today to aim for 15lbs overall instead of 20lbs. Better than the 75lbs I put on with baby #1, yikes!

Anonymous said...

my doctor said that he isn't concerned about weight gain unless your like 100 pounds when you get pregnant. I am 219 down 12 pounds after having two children in two years. I am currently 5 months pregnant for our third after having a miscarriage this past year. He said in third world countries babies are born perfectly healthy with no emphasis on weight gain. He said the baby will, "suck the fat from in between your toes." He told me I could restrict my intake and excersize, at my weight I don't need to gain another pound. So, in light of that I am signing up for WW. Just thought I would post what my doctor said. I think it is probably individual to each doctor.

The whole weight gain during pregnancy is somewhat out of our control anyway. I tried to keep my calories down but if I didn't eat I got sick and nauseous and it was just awful. I'd get the shakes some kinda terrible! So, I had to eat more. I gained 42 with my first, 34 with my 2nd and 32 with my 3rd. I ran during the first two but pulled a groin muscle with my 3rd and was near sedentary. I typically only lost 15-17 pounds at the 6 month post partum check up. So I had to lose the remaining 15+ with each child myself between pregnancies. I did it, but it wasn't easy. I learned I had borderline hypothyroid after suffering a long time. When I got the tests done with my regular doc he wouldn't treat it yet, so I had to go to the endocrinologist directly. He put me on meds and this time around losing the weight was way easier thanks to breastfeeding and the meds! I lost the 15 no prob by 6 months. I'm pretty much at my pre-baby weight though I'd like to go for another 20 or so that I gained when meeting my husband.

Ashley said...

I was about sixty pounds overweight when I got pregnant. That really became my motivation to eat healthier and I only gained about five pounds during the last month before our son was born. Now that is is six weeks old, I actually weigh 30 pounds less than I did when I got pregnant. I joined WW immediately (they have a plan for breastfeeding Moms) and the weight is still coming off at a steady pace. Just 30-40 more pounds to go!

Anonymous said...

I just wanted to say how inspiring it is to read all of the comments. Gina your site is truly amazing. I haven't had any kids, but have been wanting to start trying for several months now. We haven't started trying because I am overweight and I want to get into a healthy routine/weight before getting pregnant. In September of this year I weighed 261 pounds. I started doing WW (not going to meetings because I didn't want to pay for it) and zumba (dvds only). Now I am down to 228 and still going. I cook almost exclusively from your site. I have a degree in culinary arts, and cooking for a while became almost a chore (which is why we started eating out and I gained a ton of weight), but your recipes are simplistic enough that I enjoy cooking them and they pack a ton of flavor!! Thank you so much! I haven't figured out when I want to start trying to get pregnant, but I'm excited about where this is heading. Any advice?

I started WW in 2009, lost 50 of the 100lbs that I need to lose and was VERY active. Then I fell off the wagon and regained most of it. In August 2011 my husband and I joined a gym and started training for a 5k. I was just about to rejoin WW when I started to feel really sick and sluggish and I couldn't stop eating. I had an IUD at the time and as it turns out, it "failed" and I was pregnant. For weeks I ate uncontrollably. I was SO hungry all the time that I would cry as I ate because I felt like I was dying of hunger, it was downright painful. I gained 17 lbs by week 8 and then at week 11 we lost the baby. My hunger dissipated almost immediately, but I emotionally ate another 5 lbs before hitting the wall (we were also in the middle of buying our first house). We hadn't planned on getting pregnant and in the end I think of it as a mixed blessing. I had to gain 23 lbs to realize I do want a baby one day, that I need to finally gain control over my weight and that I am going to NEED a LOT of help when I get pregnant on purpose one day. I will probably HAVE to track. I am so scared of feeling that weird hunger again. Is it normal to get THAT hungry? By week 11 I was starting to suffer from severe nausea, so I don't know if things would have turned around for me at that point.

Now we're settled in our new house, and my new kitchen (yay!), and I'm headed back to WW this week. Time to start working on getting to "baby creating weight".

Gina @ Skinnytaste said...

Every pregnancy is different so your next one you may not feel as hungry, but yes, I found myself craving carbs more but I also made sure I snacked a lot on fruit and healthy meals.

I am in the same boat as Ashley. I weigh less now with my 7 month old than when I got pregnant. When I got pregnant it suddenly made me way more motivated to eat healthy and excercise. I made really great food choices the whole 9 months because I knew my baby was directly getting whatever I was eating. It was really important to me to have a natural childbirth, and I knew excercise would help me get in shape for the "marathon" of labor and delivery. That said, I only gained about 25 lbs. and 10 of it was in the last month. I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight about a week after my daughter was born (a totally natural childbirth, the excersise paid off!) and am about ten lbs lighter than before getting pregnant (nursing helps A LOT, because I haven't been watching what I eat at ALL). I feel like if you stick to a strict healthy eating plan, drink lots of water, and stay active, your body will naturally only gain what it needs to for your baby. When this happens, taking off the pregnancy weight is very easy!

gina, i love your blog and have made a few of your recipes so far, and they are soo good! tonight i am making your pasta fagioli soup with a whole wheat baguette.
i too am TTC, and am overweight. i have been on weight watcher's for about a month now and have lost 10 lbs, but lately haven't lost much due to cheating :X :(...
my issue i am running into is before we were TTC and i was on WW, i would drink lots of crystal light, diet drinks, OJ in the morning, and water. now my options are limited as sweetener is not good when you are pregnant, i have heard. i find it difficult to get all my 'water' in by just drinking plain old water....i find it easier if it is flavoured. do you have any low-point non-sweetener drink recipes for the pregnant or TTC woman? i would love to hear them if so! thanks!!

Tracy Grace said...

Hi Lisa Marie, I'm kind of in the same boat, overweight and TTC. I also had a hard time with plain water. I would drink coffee if i was thirsty. I have been making a decaf iced tea with a little sugar, it seems pretty harmless. Also it seems like the more water i drink, the less it bothers me that it doesn't taste like anything. Keep me posted on what you're doing, i would welcome some good ideas :)

Hi Lisa Marie, I am overweight (100+lbs over) and I had been TTC for 5 months!! I've been on WW for 6 and have lost 21. Just found out that I'm pregnant and in my 5th week. I also get bored of water and had been using a lot of crystal lite to make it a little more exciting... Try adding a squeeze of fresh lemon into your water, I find that this gives it a little flavour for 0 points+. Try adding some Stevia (not sure of the points+ values) for some sweetness and it'll be like lemonade. It's a natural sugar substitute that you can buy at your local health food store. Would be healthier than the processed sugars and it isn't artificial so it shouldn't hurt baby... Hope that helps a bit!! :o)

Anonymous said...

thanks for the help ladies!! i super love the idea of decaf tea with a tad bit of sugar. i think that is what i will do...anything other than water, use just a tiny bit of sugar in it to sweeten it. anonymous....congrats on the pregnancy!! yayyy!!

My mom has just gave birth to my little brother few months ago. She's gained a lot of weight and she's having trouble about her dresses that don't fit for her anymore. What would be the best diet for her?

Elizabeth said...

I lost 35 pounds on WW before I became pregnant. I wasn't at my goal weight, but I was in really good shape.

I didn't count points while I was pregnant largely because there was so much I could not stand to eat. Chicken, pork and turkey all smelled and tasted terrible, for example. So did coffee and diet soda, which was actually a good thing. Even chocolate and most sweets didn't taste good.

Fortunately, though, what *did* taste good were fruits, vegetables and whole grains. I ate a lot of those, a LOT of beans, as much fish as I could safely eat, and lean beef -- although I could only stand it rare.

I did gain weight, but only after I was put on bed rest. What I gained was due to inactivity, not overeating.

I did briefly try WW while breastfeeding, but I noticed an immediate and significant reduction in my supply. Fortunately, since I was mostly pumping (my daughter was very preemie), I noticed it early enough before it became critical. After that, I quit WW and went back to just eating healthy. The baby needed the milk more than I needed to lose the weight right then.

Personally, I would worry more about staying in shape during pregnancy and eating healthy amounts of what you and the baby need. What literally saved mine and my baby's lives was that my body was in good enough shape to weather a perfect storm of pregnancy problems.

On the plus side, most of what you should be eating isn't that high in points, anyway. Just eat sensibly and you'll be fine!

Only 9 pounds! That's awesome! I was doing really well in the beginning. I didn't gain anything for a while and then all of the sudden I ballooned. I was over weight before so not gaining was no big deal. I was put on blood pressure for my swelling and blood pressure. I lost almost 20 pounds after I had my baby and the few weeks after because I was losing all the water weight. I hovered around 230 for almost 2 years now. I was around 208 when I got pregnant. Yes, obese. But now I am down to 223 from 234 in a month. I post a lot about my weight loss over at my blog. It's been a process but I'm excited to finally start reaching some goals. :)

Anonymous said...

I had just begun WW when i found out I was pregnant and had just lost 10 lbs. I weighed 150lbs and on my last weigh in before Baby was born was 210 lbs had really bad fluid retention. When I returned home after having baby I weighed 170 lbs. A month later I began WW again.
Today my Baby is 5mos and I weigh 135 lbs and am still losing. My Goal is 130 and I know I will reach it soon. I feel great and have had a blast using your recipes. You can't always control the weight you put on during pregnancy but you can control it after. Relax when your pregnant and enjoy the experience.
